In 2012, Avid acquired Sibelius and subsequently laid off the entire development team (some of whom are now working for Steinberg on a new composing solution). Since then, I’ve also owned Sibelius versions 3 & 4. Sibelius beat Finale to an OS X native version by three years, and I happily bought a student-discounted edition of Sibelius 2. At the time, it looked like Encore was going to be discontinued, and MakeMusic (neé Coda Music) took until 2004 to release an OS X native version of Finale. Sibelius has a long history on the Mac, and I have to admit a bit of Sibelius bias simply because it was the first music notation application I purchased after upgrading to OS X when it was still a new system.

What I found upon launching Sibelius 7 First is an application that feels both alien and familiar, elegant and clumsy, and that doesn’t entirely feel at home on Mac OS X while still managing to be one of the more efficiently productive notation solutions out there. I’ve long been a fan of Sibelius, so I was excited to give their newest offering a try - even if this is a feature-restricted version of the notation package I’ve known for years. Maybe this is because it is a free version.Įdit: It would also be nice to decide for myself if certain settings, such as sharps(etc)/dots/ or ties were one time events or stayed on until mechanically changed by having to turn them off. I also notice that editing on Finale Notepad and deletions in particular are rather kludgy. I have been printing at + 4% on my printer, which makes the notes slightly more visible for my slight amount of cataracts, which helps and it only trims off the very far right hand edge, which I add back as a few lines at the end of the staves. I would also like to be able to increase the note size just slightly. And for music only with no words, I can see that the distance between the upper and lower staff could be reduced putting more music on a page. I have to erase the entire section and rewrite it.Ģ) The reach is too far to get a new note or other often changed function.ģ) I want to be able to promote a compression of the music some what if the result goes to a third page with not much on it.
there does not appear to be a way to highlight the section of the wrong voice and do a simple click on something to convert it. Niggles are:ġ) The second voice button at bottom left of page it too small and I occasionally forget to put the setting back to the 1st voice.

I have a windows machine and will be creating sheet music files, and then am planning to either print them in the most convenient form, preferably only 2 pages, or I will be displaying them on a surface 3 (in tablet format, but surface 3 is a full windows machine).ĭoes anyone have a preference for Sibelius First or Finale Print Music. I have been using Finale Notepad and am considering moving up to one of the paid versions above.
